Paul was undoubtedly the preeminent figure of early Christianity and made history in a threefold way: (1) He was the crucial representative of the mission to the gentiles without the requirement of circumcision. With his mission oriented to the west, he not only opened new fields for activity, but he also created the presupposition for the survival of the new movement after the fall of Jerusalem. (2) Pauline theology provided the theoretical foundation for this expansion and turned out to be extraordinarily adaptable and powerful; adaptable with respect to Jewish and Greco-Roman culture and powerful within early Christianity. (3) The impact is in no way limited to the deutero-Pauline letters, but extends both to Acts and to the Gospels (see below, 13.5.2). Whether in a positive or negative way, almost every NT writing is influenced by Paul.
